The public art installation is called “Flaming Cactus” and has now taken over 23 light poles in Hudson Square through the holidays.

Artists use thousands of fluorescent-colored zip ties to turn everyday objects like lampposts into something vibrant and interesting to look at.

“We chose cable ties because they are a common every day item. We wanted to sort of show people that it doesn’t take a lot of money to make art. And that creativity is something that everybody is capable of,” Preston Dane from Animus Arts Collective said.

Zip ties are typically used to bundle things like cables.

The “Flaming Cactus” project was developed by a team of people at the Animus Arts Collective and the Hudson Square Connection.
