Location Description
The sculpture is sited in the courtyard adjacent to Central Iowa Shelter & Services on 1420 Mulberry Street, Des Moines.

Thunderer was installed by Neumann Construction on September 7, 2012 at this location. The dimensions of the sculpture are 12′ 6″ x 17′ 4″ x 5′ 3″.

The artist Rob Craig said it is part of a series of sculptures that take their abstract form from selected objects, in this case the classic Acme brand whistle. "The whistle is a tool of intervention and communication and calls us to stop, to change direction," said Craig. "It elicits a range of meanings from safety to music to celebration. As the Shelter provides safety, nourishment and promotes efficacy, the whistle functionally and symbolically is also engaged with these activities."
