To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the opening of the North Side Library, the Des Moines Public Library commissioned two pieces of artwork by Todd Niccum of T + B Design Lab. The first sculpture is a large arch on the wall of the children’s area, based on the beloved community arch on Sixth Avenue. The community arch welcomes people to the Oak Park and Highland Park neighborhoods. The second is a miniature, rotating carousel, which also functions as a book display. The carousel commemorates another neighborhood staple, the Heritage Carousel at Union Park. Both sculptures, along with building improvements, were made possible thanks to gifts from the Mary K. Davis Estate, the KFC Foundation, and the Lane Hathaway Early Literacy Fund. The latter gift was made through the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines, and all three gifts were facilitated by the Des Moines Public Library Foundation.
