The Community Foundation commissioned Jill Wells to paint the 4,500-square foot mural, Future, for the Evelyn K. Davis Center for Working Families. In conversations with Marvin DeJear, former Director of The Evelyn K. Davis Center for Working Families, Wells focused on African American homeownership as a central theme in the life work of Evelyn K. Davis and J. Barry Griswell.

Wells aimed to execute a mural that exhibits diversity and tells multiple stories. She and co-muralist Marissa Hernandez depict our community in a manner that is relatable and legible to the passer-by, both pedestrians and drivers traveling between 15-30 miles per hour. Wells’ design process was multifaceted. She created three designs, conducted community outreach, met with the Davis family, and wrote a personal letter to Mrs. Griswell. Wells found that Barry and Evelyn were described as passionate, persistent, responsible, optimistic, imaginative, organized problem solvers, and risk-takers. Wells sought to create an artwork “rich with representation that felt like the heart and spirit of Evelyn, Barry, and our community.”

In addition to the central themes of the mural, which include African American homeownership, peer-to-peer-fellowship, and education, the following foliate symbols are also present:

  • GREEN (color) depicts hope, renewal, and revival.
  • Monstera: symbolizes honor, respect, and longevity (Great for: Someone who values their background and family history).
  • Snake Plant: symbolizes cleanliness and tenacity (Great for: Someone who is creative or as a housewarming gift because it naturally purifies the air).
  • Ferns: symbolize sincerity towards others.
  • Hosta: symbolizes devotion and friendship and very effective in groups or massed.
