The materials of the public artist have moved beyond bronze, marble, and stained glass. Public art today reflects the growth of electronic art and socially integrated design that continues to expand the artist’s palette and the artist’s role in the public sphere. A city is a lively, active world with an intense level of usage. Caring for public art is complicated. The Public Art Foundation’s conservation program is based on three basic components: assessment, maintenance, and treatment. While the ways in which weather and the public might interact with public art are never entirely known or predictable, conservation is an essential component of ensuring that public art continues to enrich our environment, prompts us to ask questions, and feeds our imaginations.
Education Resources:
Dedicated to deepening and enhancing the experience of public art for people of all ages, the Public Art Foundation offers an array of engaging education resources: on-line curriculum, research and archives, and interpretive projects, such as public tours and artists’ talks.
Technology:
To advance its mission through the use of innovative forms of digital technologies, particularly the Internet and DSM Public Art App, the Public Art Foundation is committed to the application of media as a means to assist, educate, and inspire residents and visitors.
Public Art Endowment:
The endowment fund is a new program for the Public Art Foundation. It began in 2017 with a gift of $10,000. Endowment funds are invested in perpetuity, unlike expendable funds which are used for annual operations, programs, projects and initiatives. Through endowment resources, innovative activities can be supported that might not otherwise have had a chance to exist.
The growth of endowment funds are fundamental to planning long term stability, fiscal responsibility, and financial viability. The goal is to provide a steady predictable source of income over time, on which GDMPAF can make commitments and build its programs — nurturing the community’s wider strategies for economic, social and cultural development. As the endowment grows through prudent investment, management and gifts, it will strengthen the Public Art Foundation’s aim to enrich the lives of residents and visitors by advancing the best of public art.
