A lifelong resident of Des Moines, Robert Whicker became involved in visual art at an early age. He has experimented with a variety of media, beginning with classes at the Des Moines Art Center as a child, and most recently contributing to the 48 Hour Film Project—world’s oldest and largest timed filmmaking competition. Although skilled in various disciplines, Whicker’s main artistic outlet is graphic design. Employed in the field since 1990, he is currently a designer at Meredith Corporation. At Meredith, Whicker works closely with many upper level executives, and with outside organizations such as United Way, Junior Achievement and Rebuilding Together. He is recognized for his problem solving skills, speedy execution and clean, minimalist designs.

Outside of Meredith, Whicker has also contributed design work and photography to Lucca Restaurant, Primary Health Care, Capitol City Pride, The Eychaner Foundation and many other businesses and charitable foundations in the greater Des Moines area.

With the art installation at Redhead Park, Robert Whicker hopes to inspire the children of the area by using their images and ideas in a space they will see frequently. Ultimately he would like “Shine” to give everyone in the area an increased sense of neighborhood pride, and community.
